Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) Specialist Palliative and Supportive Care Service aims to improve the quality of life for patients with a non curable or life-limiting illness. We aim to reduce suffering through early identification, assessment and treatment of physical symptoms including pain. RBWH provides support that ensures the patient and their family’s psychological, spiritual, social and cultural needs are met.

The RBWH dedicated team of medical, nursing and administration staff work closely with your healthcare team to provide you the best individualised care. Our aim is to make sure your goals of care are understood and respected.

Specialist consultation/liaison service
Outpatient clinic
Inpatient pain and symptom assessment, management and advice
Inpatient psychosocial and spiritual support and appropriate referral
Support for advance care planning
Liaison and support to GPs and domiciliary nurses in the community
Referral to local palliative care services including inpatient units and community services
Education programs.

How to access this service:

The Palliative and Supportive Care Service is a consultation liaison service with a limited outpatient service. This service accepts internal referrals from treating teams. GPs may contact the service directly if their patient is having treatment at RBWH.

Canossa Private Hospital is a modern surgical and medical facility operated by the Canossian Sisters. The hospital is located in Oxley in the Western Suburbs of Brisbane, approximately 20 minutes from the CBD.

The hospital currently has 67 private inpatient beds each with picturesque views of the surrounding Brisbane Valley.

Palliative Care

Palliative care at Toowoomba Hospital is provided in a 24 bed unit. There are also community outreach services available.

Other support services available include social workers, physio, dietitian, occupational therapist and equipment for hire.

A referral from a doctor is necessary to access this service.

Innisfail Hospital is a QLD Health 49 bed facility that offers palliative care services.
They also offer allied health facilities including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, radiography, pharmacy and speech pathology.

The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital at Buderim is a not-for-profit organisation owned by the Uniting Church.

Gympie Private Hospital provides palliative care beds in a medical ward focusing on pain and symptom control.
